Stable Diffusion is the Linux of image generation: free, open, endlessly customisable, and slightly intimidating. While rivals sell subscriptions, Stability AI released its models to the world, and a massive community built the tooling around them.
What it does well
Control is total. ControlNet lets you dictate pose and composition from a sketch; LoRAs teach the model your product, character, or art style; fine-tunes exist for every niche imaginable. Running locally means no censorship filters, no usage caps, and no images leaving your machine — decisive for client-confidential work.
Where it falls short
The honest cost is time. ComfyUI and similar interfaces are node-based power tools with real learning curves, and you'll want a modern GPU with 8GB+ of VRAM for comfortable local generation. Untuned output quality sits below Midjourney; the gap closes only after you invest in setup.
Pricing
The models are free to download and use. Costs are your hardware, or a few cents per image on cloud GPU services if you rent compute.
Who should use it
Developers, technical artists, and studios needing custom styles, privacy, or volume economics that subscriptions can't offer.
