Synopsis
When Richard Hudson (Richard Hamstead) murders his former ally, the ally's daughter Sarah Jamson launches a solitary campaign of psychological warfare β leaving staged corpses as messages to haunt him. Meanwhile, Kael (Kevin Tan), a man tied to Hudson's past through a lost love named Chloe Varenne, finds himself drawn toward rebellion as Sarah's crusade escalates.
As the body count becomes a language of its own, Kael must choose between the power structure he serves and the conscience Sarah's vengeance has awakened.
Dolioo Review: A Lean Revenge Thriller That Struggles to Fill Its Runtime
Dolioo arrives with a tantalizing premise β a daughter's psychological war against her father's killer β but its 75-minute runtime raises immediate questions about whether the story has room to breathe. Director Julius John and writer Amayah Sardar Khan set up a classic action-thriller framework: Sarah Jamson (uncredited in the principal cast list) haunts Richard Hudson (Richard Hamstead) with "vengeance-marked corpses," while Chloe Varenne's memory pulls Kael (Kevin Tan) toward rebellion. The ingredients are there for a taut, character-driven revenge piece.
Direction and Pacing
John's direction shows ambition. The tagline β "Power is built on the bones of the fallen" β suggests a film interested in the moral weight of violence, not just its spectacle. But 75 minutes is brutally short for an action-thriller-adventure hybrid that needs to establish characters, stakes, and a psychological cat-and-mouse game. Early scenes hint at a deliberate, atmospheric approach β shadows, silence, the weight of grief β but the compressed runtime forces exposition into dialogue rather than letting it breathe through action. You feel the clock ticking, and not in a good way.
Performances
Kevin Tan carries Kael with a quiet intensity that serves the "reluctant rebel" arc well; he conveys more with a glance than some actors do with monologues. Richard Hamstead's Hudson is suitably menacing, though the script gives him more archetype than dimension. The absence of credited actresses for Sarah Jamson and Chloe Varenne is conspicuous β their performances would make or break the emotional core, and without seeing them, it's impossible to judge whether the psychological haunting lands or feels schematic.
Who Will Enjoy It
Fans of lean, low-budget action that prioritizes mood over mayhem may find something to appreciate here. Viewers expecting elaborate set pieces, deep character studies, or a fully realized world will likely leave wanting. Dolioo feels like a proof-of-concept stretched to feature length β or a feature compressed into a short film's skeleton.
Pros
- Kevin Tan delivers a compelling, understated lead performance
- Atmospheric direction suggests a distinct visual voice
- Intriguing psychological-revenge premise with moral ambiguity
- Lean runtime means no filler β if you're engaged, it never drags
Cons
- 75 minutes is insufficient for the character depth the story requires
- Key female characters (Sarah Jamson, Chloe Varenne) uncredited in principal cast
- Exposition often substitutes for dramatic development
- Action-thriller-adventure scope feels mismatched with micro-budget constraints
- Ending arrives before emotional stakes fully land
Verdict
Dolioo has a sharp hook and committed lead performances, but its 75-minute runtime suffocates the psychological depth its premise demands. Worth a watch for micro-budget thriller completists; others may find it more frustrating than satisfying.
