Synopsis

In 1989, acclaimed actor Ian Charleson (Andrew Scott) accepts the role of Hamlet at the National Theatre while concealing an AIDS diagnosis. As rehearsals progress and his health declines, Charleson channels his dwindling energy into a performance that blurs the line between the Danish prince's existential crisis and his own. Director Margaret Johnson (Olivia Colman) and a devoted company — including Richard Eyre (Johnny Flynn) and a young Nicholas (Joe Locke) — witness a man transforming his final act into something that transcends the stage.

Based on true events, the film follows Charleson's last months with unflinching attention to the craft of acting and the quiet heroism of showing up, day after day, when the body refuses to cooperate.
