Synopsis

Documentarian Trisha Ziff examines the extraordinary afterlife of Frida Kahlo — how the Mexican painter, dead since 1954, became a ubiquitous global icon claimed by movements ranging from Chicanx identity and disability advocacy to queer visibility and mainstream consumer culture. Through archival material, cultural commentary, and a cascade of licensed merchandise, the film maps the phenomenon dubbed "Fridamania."

Without narration, the documentary lets scholars, activists, and artists debate the stakes: is Kahlo's ubiquity a triumph of representation or a dilution of her radical politics? The film traces the tension between intimate biography and mass-market myth, asking what happens when an artist's image escapes its origins.
