Synopsis
Filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom revisits the themes of her 2011 documentary to examine how social media algorithms, AI bias, and digital surveillance have intensified sexism and misogyny toward women and girls. Through interviews with political leaders, tech whistleblowers, scholars, and activists, the film maps the cultural backlash against women's mental health, agency, and political power in the algorithmic age.
From congressional hearings on Big Tech accountability to intimate stories of teens navigating Instagram's comparison trap, the documentary connects platform design choices to real-world harms — eating disorders, political silencing, non-consensual imagery — while arguing that the same technologies could be redesigned for equity.
