Synopsis

In a quiet suburban home, young Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark) begins to interact with a presence that looks exactly like her mother (Jessica Chastain). As the entity — dubbed “Other Mommy” — grows more insistent, Bela is drawn into a dark, hidden world that blurs the line between familial love and something far more sinister.

Her father (Jay Duplass) and extended family (Karen Allen, Arian Moayed, Dichen Lachman) struggle to understand the changes in Bela, while the house itself seems to pulse with an unseen force. The film follows Bela’s deepening bond with the doppelgänger and the escalating terror that threatens to consume the entire household.

Other Mommy Review: A Familiar Horror That Struggles to Find Its Voice

Direction

Rob Savage, known for the tight, found‑footage tension of Host, tries to translate that intimacy into a more conventional haunted‑house setup. The result is a film that feels visually competent — dim corridors, flickering lights, a handful of well‑timed jump scares — but rarely pushes beyond the genre’s comfort zone. Savage’s pacing is uneven; the first act drags while the third act rushes toward a climax that feels both predictable and under‑explained. The cinematography leans on muted blues and harsh shadows, which creates a serviceable mood but never becomes a visual signature.

Performances

Jessica Chastain carries the dual role of Mommy and the titular Other Mommy with a cold precision that is the movie’s strongest asset. She manages to make the entity feel both seductive and menacing without ever slipping into camp. Jay Duplass as Daddo provides a grounded, weary counterpoint, while Arabella Olivia Clark delivers a believable child’s curiosity turning into dread. The supporting cast — Karen Allen, Arian Moayed, Dichen Lachman — are serviceable but given little to do beyond exposition, leaving their characters feeling like plot devices rather than people.

Story & Atmosphere

The script, co‑written by Josh Malerman and Nathan Elston, leans heavily on the “evil doppelgänger” trope. The premise — a young girl bonding with a sinister double of her mother — is compelling on paper, yet the narrative never fully explores the psychological ramifications. Themes of grief, maternal anxiety, and identity are introduced then abandoned in favor of conventional scares. The 93‑minute runtime feels both too short to develop the mythology and too long for the thin plot that remains. Sound design offers a few effective moments — whispered lullabies, sudden silences — but they are not enough to sustain tension across the whole film.

Who Will Enjoy It

Fans of atmospheric, low‑budget horror who appreciate a strong lead performance may find enough to like. Viewers expecting a fresh spin on the “creepy child” subgenre will likely leave disappointed. The current audience score of 5.8/10 reflects this split reception, suggesting the film resonates with a niche but fails to connect broadly.

Pros

  • Jessica Chastain’s compelling dual portrayal anchors the film
  • Effective low‑key sound design in key scenes
  • Atmospheric cinematography that suits the haunted‑house setting
  • Brisk 93‑minute runtime prevents overstay

Cons

  • Predictable plot that leans heavily on the evil‑doppelgänger trope
  • Underdeveloped supporting characters and themes
  • Uneven pacing — slow start, rushed climax
  • Lacks a distinctive visual or narrative identity

Verdict

Other Mommy showcases a standout dual performance from Jessica Chastain but ultimately settles for familiar horror beats instead of forging new ground. It’s a watchable, if uneven, entry for genre completists, but unlikely to satisfy viewers craving originality.
