Synopsis
Four friends โ Hudson, Jeffery, Joseph, and Devon โ head into the Canadian backcountry for a camping trip. Their excursion takes a brutal turn when they discover a deep, bone-strewn pit in the woods and find themselves trapped at the bottom with a masked killer stalking the rim.
As panic sets in and escape attempts fail, the group must confront the reality that their weekend getaway has become a fight for survival against a silent, relentless predator โ while park rangers nearby remain unaware of the nightmare unfolding below.
Pit Of Bones Review: A Micro-Budget Descent That Struggles to Escape Its Own Limitations
At just 15 minutes, Pit Of Bones barely qualifies as a theatrical feature โ and that brevity is both its shield and its undoing. Writer-director Boston Oliver (who also stars as Hudson) crafts a bare-bones horror premise: four friends camping in the Canadian wilderness stumble into the titular pit, where a killer (Declan McCarthy) awaits. The tagline โ "Its a Pit with Bones" โ signals zero pretension, but the execution rarely rises above student-film roughness.
Direction and Atmosphere
Oliver shoots the woods with a serviceable, if anonymous, eye. The pit itself โ presumably a practical set or dressed location โ has a grimy tactility that helps. But the short runtime forces a rush: setup, descent, confrontation, and climax all cram into a quarter-hour, leaving no room for dread to accumulate. The R rating suggests gore, yet the violence feels more implied than visceral, likely a budget constraint. Oliver's dual role as director/lead stretches him thin; his performance as Hudson is functional but never commands the screen.
Performances and Script
The ensemble โ Jesse Keefe as Jeffery, Mitchell Daley as Joseph, Jaxon Oliver as Devon โ delivers lines with the earnest awkwardness of actors given minimal rehearsal. Dialogue leans heavily on exposition ("We shouldn't have come here") rather than character. Matt Moore's Chief Ranger and Reuben Ball's Ranger appear briefly, seemingly to bookend the nightmare with authority figures who arrive too late. McCarthy's Killer is a silent, masked presence; without mythology or motivation, he's a prop, not a threat.
Who Might Watch This?
Completists of micro-budget Canadian horror, or viewers curious what a 15-minute theatrical slot looks like in 2026. Anyone expecting narrative depth, sustained tension, or polished craft should look elsewhere. Pit Of Bones exists in that liminal space between calling-card short and feature โ too slight for the latter, too public for the former.
Pros
- Practical pit set has genuine grime and texture
- Brisk 15-minute runtime respects viewer's time
- Canadian wilderness photography occasionally atmospheric
- No pretension โ delivers exactly what the title promises
Cons
- Runtime too short for character investment or dread buildup
- Performances feel under-rehearsed across the board
- Killer lacks presence, mythology, or memorable design
- Dialogue relies on clunky exposition over naturalism
- Feels more like a proof-of-concept than a complete film
Verdict
A well-intentioned but severely constrained micro-short that never overcomes its runtime or budget. Curiosity watch only for ultra-low-budget horror completists.
