Synopsis

Run Terry Run draws on 96 reels of previously unseen footage and unheard audio interviews to reconstruct Terry Fox’s 1980 Marathon of Hope — his cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research after losing a leg to the disease. The documentary follows Fox, his brother Darrell, friend Doug Alward, and the small support team through the daily grind of the marathon, the swelling public response, and the physical and emotional toll that eventually forced Fox to stop near Thunder Bay.

Director Sean Menard assembles this archival treasure trove into a chronological portrait that emphasizes immediacy over analysis, letting the original participants — including journalists, celebrities, and family — speak through decades-old recordings. The film covers the launch in St. John’s, the Ontario surge, and the abrupt, heartbreaking end, framing the journey as both a personal crusade and a spontaneous national phenomenon.
