The Statue of Unity and Patel’s legacy
The statue’s name points directly to the political idea associated with Patel’s public life. Following independence, the task of bringing together territories formerly governed as British India and 562 princely states was central to the formation of the modern Indian Union. The monument presents Patel not simply as an individual leader, but as a symbol of that integration.
Its pose is deliberately grounded rather than theatrical. Patel is shown in a dhoti and sandals, walking forward with a calm, firm expression. The design grew from a smaller Patel statue at Ahmedabad International Airport, then developed into a vastly enlarged monument for the Narmada Valley site.

How the Statue of Unity was built
Creating a figure of this height required an unusually complex engineering response. The statue reaches a total structural height of 240 metres (790 feet) when its 58-metre (190-foot) base is included. Its narrow lower profile, created by the draped legs and sandalled feet, made stability a particularly important concern.

The project was announced by Narendra Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat, on 7 October 2013. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust was formed to carry it forward, while Larsen & Toubro began construction on 31 October 2014 after winning the contract.

The monument was developed through a public-private partnership, with major support from the Gujarat government as well as contributions from public sector undertakings through corporate social responsibility programmes. Its development also involved a public campaign that invited farmers to contribute used iron farm tools.

Travel access has also become part of the experience. The Ahmedabad Junction–Ekta Nagar Steam Heritage Special, numbered 09409/09410, was inaugurated on 30 October 2023 and runs on weekends with a stop at Vadodara Junction. Despite its steam-era appearance, its locomotive is electric.
